Is the Subaru the most well known rally car ?
To anyone in the UK and for that matter probably worldwide, the Subaru Impreza is always linked with the late Colin McRae. Thats because many rally fans will have had the experience of watching him pedal the car to victory in his early days of being a WRC driver. When he started, he was probably the first real hope we had in the UK of a World Rally champion, so support on rally events up and down the country was massive, on anything from National to the RAC rally.
The Impreza had its first rally win in his hands and then went on to win many WRC events with other drivers at the wheel such as Petter Solberg. its probably the most well-known of all the recent rally cars.
In its road-going form it has a characteristic noise as a result of its flat 4 engine layout and now there are thousands of drivers getting at least some of the feeling of a rally experience, just by driving around on the road. Whether they could even half handle their cars on a rally stage is another matter of course !
